Now, for my story.
Back in the mid 80's when I was just a I wanted to play like Gary More (Still Got The Blues). I asked my mum if I could learn guitar and she said yes. A few weeks later I found myself taking classical guitar lessons from a teacher who hated his job and had no interest in rock or blues.
Reading music,arpeggio studies and learning "Romance" wasn't what I had in mind . Looking back now, I do appreciate what I learned, but back then Rock and Blues was all I cared about.
Needless to say I didn't really enjoy my lessons. And I didn't really practice
Then Tabs came along. You know tablature -the six-line staff that graphically represents the guitar fingerboard with numbers instead of notes. I thought it was the best and started buying guitar magazines and transcriptions almost every weekend.
The tabs helped a little. But I would jump form learning one song to the next - learning riffs or parts of solos, and never really mastering a song.
When I got together with friends who also played guitar, all could do was show off a few rifts and licks.
I couldn't even play a song in its entire.
Maybe this is where you are at now...? If it is, I know what you are going through. Because I was like that for a few years. And the worst of it was.....drum roll please.... I was practicing..
But when I say practicing I better define what practicing meant back then - ready - it was more like doodling. I would just spend hours and hours playing parts of this and that not really learning anything. I had no focus or goal whatsoever. I now cringe when I think of the many hours I wasted "practicing" back then.

Some of my friends were in the same boat. But then there were other kids who seemed to be improving by the day. And man, did that make me jealous and depressed.
Now here comes the dramatic part of the story. You know the life changing event
Here it comes.......
After I finished high school I started taking lesson from a really good teacher. That is it
At the start of the first lesson he asked me to show him what I could play. Once he saw that I was pretty useless he laid down the law
He had one ground rule - he wouldn't teach me any songs, licks or solos until I had mastered the fundamentals.
He gave only a few exercises and taught me focused practice and made me set goals. He held me accountable to my goals and really pushed me
Within a few moths my playing radically change. It was amazingly simple when I think about it now.
Of course I had to practice, but I actually enjoyed myself. He kind of took the pressure of to be good at playing guitar.
So that is it......
In a nutshell;....... It wasn't until I mastered the fundamentals that my guitar playing changed. Then I moved on to bigger and better things with my playing. I now teach guitar privately part-time.
Now, I can almost hear your mind saying " learning the fundamentals is boring....WRONG!
First of all it is essential.....And learning the fundamentals is exciting because of the power and potential it can give you.
Maybe you think you know the fundamentals. You are WRONG there, too. You wouldn't be reading this unless you could play the guitar reasonably well. It might sound harsh, but I want to be straight with you.
When I say fundamentals I don't mean a few open chords and a basic two string shuffle rhythm
I am talking about Blues fundamentals:

- Understanding

- Knowing how to play the pentatonic major and pentatonic minor scale in all keys
